Why Design Matters in Security
An ID card is often the first line of visual security. A poorly designed card can easily be counterfeited, while a cluttered card makes it impossible for security personnel to quickly verify a person's identity.
Typography and Readability
Always use sans-serif fonts like Inter, Roboto, or Helvetica. The employee's name should be the largest text on the card, easily readable from at least 6 feet away. Never use script or overly decorative fonts.
Color Coding for Quick Identification
Implementing a color bar or colored lanyard system based on department or clearance level is a highly effective security measure. For instance, blue for full-time employees, orange for contractors, and red for visitors.
Photo Guidelines
The photo should occupy at least 30% of the card's real estate. Ensure it is taken against a solid, contrasting background (usually white or light gray) with even lighting to prevent harsh shadows.
